Energy
- Global warming may be a man-made or a natural phenomenon.
The science is not clear. But it is undeniable that it’s happening!
- By following “green”, sustainable principles in environmental conservation the very least we will do is leave our children a cleaner world!
- United States must lead with a strategy to cease depending on petroleum based energy.
- We are competing for a globally scarce resource – weakening our economy and our security
- Congress and the Executive, together, must articulate a strategy with “stretch” goals and specific time-tables
- Success will require discipline, focus, risk-taking and sacrifice from all of us.
- Walk more
- Heat and cool less
- Drive smaller and more efficient automobiles
- Improve public transit and increase ridership
- Reduce our consumption of plastics
- Be more aware of where and how petroleum is used in many consumable and industrial products
- Recycle what can’t be replaced
- Develop a comprehensive Energy Reform Policy that begins with interim steps to eliminating our dependence on middle eastern crude oil in 5 years or less
- Exploit known significant oil deposits under the continental US and construct new plant capacity to refine it.
- Re-open the scientific discussion to determine if limited exploration and extraction of oil from the large known oil reserves in Alaska and off our Atlantic and Pacific Ocean coastlines could be done consistent with environmental protections and only for a limited period of years.
- Increase funding for alternative energy sources and develop production processes that are petroleum and hydro-carbon free
- All commonly mentioned sources o f alternative energy, use petroleum products to produce so-called eco-friendly fuels:
- Hydrogen
- Electricity
- Bio-fuels
- Intensify research into the safe use of nuclear fuels to power energy
- Invest in wind, thermal and solar energy development
- Manage water utilization to maximize the available water for hydro-electric power generation
- Rapid distribution of new energy forms can only occur through the existing energy infrastructure. Big OIL will need to evolve into BIG ENERGY. While some of the oil companies are making alternative energy investments and placing bigger bets on alternative energy research,
- Chevron has made a $500M grant to UC Berkeley to study alternative fuels
- BP has committed 3% of current year revenue for alternative energy R and D
- An EFFECTIVE Long-Term Energy Independence plan must include incentives (both positive and negative) to accelerate this evolution
