Cordi for Congress - Candidate California 15th Congressional District

Foreign Policy

  • Israel
    • Continue aggressive diplomacy in support of a two-state solution – Palestine and Israel
    • Strengthen the military, social, and economic ties between US and Israel, Jordan, and Palestinian people
  • Iraq/Afghanistan
    • Our democratic allies in NATO must “step up” in Afghanistan as much to protect themselves as to support our efforts
      • Barring a stronger NATO commitment to the Afghanistan mission, the US Congress needs to hold hearings concerning the viability of the NATO alliance and the degree of support the US gives to the alliance.
    • No issue is more urgent for the next President of the United States AND the next Congress of the United States than to bring the Iraq war to a conclusion.
      • New President and Leaders of both houses and both major parties
        • Speak with a single voice to the Iraqi government
        • Support elections, self-determination and self-defense in Iraq
        • Expand the international diplomatic coalition in Iraq
      • Emphasize that our commitment is not open ended but is based on shared sacrifice measured in a reduced American presence in Iraq and neighboring countries.
      • Pursue a plan to eliminate middle eastern oil purchases by US within 5 years
  • Iran and Korea
    • The threat posed by either a nuclear North Korea or a nuclear Iran is a threat to the civilized world. The US cannot act alone and the world cannot fail to act.
    • If the UN will not act effectively with sanctions, then the willing democracies of Western World must act directly – emphasizing economics and diplomacy but backed by force
  • Europe
    • Muslim majority by the middle of the century –
      • Resulting in increasingly conservative governments in France and Germany
      • Our foreign policy must recognize and move proactively to address this challenge
  • China
    • China is experiencing a rapid period of industrialization – as did Europe and America in the 19 th and 20 th centuries. History teaches that increased industrial wealth leads to the development of a strong middle class more interested in peace and prosperity as a check on aggressive governments.
    • The US should engage in commerce with the growing Chinese market place and use the resulting economic leverage in its dealings with the Chinese government on issues of defense, deterrence and human rights.
    • China rapid industrialization requires their compulsory participation in efforts to reduce global atmospheric pollution.
    • Our dependence on Chinese steel – at the cost of our domestic steel industry – is a threat to our national (defense) security
  • SE Asia
    • Greatest new market
      • India = 100M new middle class consumers
      • Vietnam – economic development is leading to political stability
    • Still politically unstable
      • Philippines
      • Pakistan
